Updated October 2026. Coverage rules change often, so always confirm with your own plan.
“Will my insurance pay for it?” is usually the second question I hear about GLP-1 medications, right after “Is it right for me?” The honest answer is: it depends on your plan, and it depends on why the medication is prescribed. Here’s how coverage looks in Texas right now.
Weight loss vs. diabetes: why it matters
Insurers treat the same family of medications differently depending on the diagnosis:
- For type 2 diabetes (Ozempic, Mounjaro and others), most plans cover GLP-1s, usually with prior authorization.
- For weight loss (Wegovy, Zepbound and others), coverage is much less common and has more conditions attached.
I can only prescribe for a diagnosis you actually have, so this isn’t something we can work around. What I can do is make sure your records accurately document every condition that may qualify you.
Coverage by type of insurance
| Insurance | Covers GLP-1s for weight loss? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Medicare (Part D) | Yes, through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge, July 1, 2026 to Dec. 31, 2027 | $50 per month copay. Requires prior authorization and a qualifying BMI. |
| Texas Medicaid | No, not for weight loss alone | GLP-1s for type 2 diabetes are covered with prior authorization. |
| Employer plans | Sometimes | In a 2026 survey, about 36% of employers covered GLP-1s for weight loss. |
| Marketplace and individual plans | Varies by plan | Check the plan’s drug list (formulary) before you enroll. |
The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge
If you have Medicare Part D, this is the biggest change in years. You may qualify if you are 18 or older and have:
- A BMI of 35 or higher, or
- A BMI of 30 or higher plus heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or stage 3a or higher kidney disease, or
- A BMI of 27 or higher plus prediabetes, a prior heart attack or stroke, or symptomatic peripheral artery disease
Covered medications are Wegovy (injection or tablet), Zepbound (KwikPen only) and Foundayo. The Bridge doesn’t apply if you have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea or fatty liver disease, because your regular Part D plan may already cover GLP-1s for those. Your provider handles the prior authorization. Medicare open enrollment runs through December 7, which is a good time to check your drug plan.
If your plan doesn’t cover it
You still have options:
- Cash prices have dropped. Manufacturer and government-negotiated cash programs (including TrumpRx) list Wegovy injections at $199 to $399 a month and Zepbound KwikPen at up to $699 a month, depending on dose.
- HSA or FSA funds can often be used for prescribed medication.
- Appeals sometimes work, especially when you have weight-related conditions like high blood pressure or sleep apnea.
- Medication isn’t the only tool. A structured plan for nutrition, activity and sleep is part of every medical weight loss plan, with or without a GLP-1.
Before prescribing, I look at more than coverage. Read what I look for before prescribing a GLP-1, or book a weight loss visit, in person in Rowlett or virtually anywhere in Texas.
